Most rental units in Berkeley must be registered annually with the Rent Board, with fees that vary based on the type of unit. This guide outlines the 2025–2026 registration fees, key deadlines, and what actions are required to stay in compliance.

Fees Are Due Whether or Not You Receive a Bill
Registration fees are legally required, whether or not you receive a billing statement. Property owners are responsible for ensuring timely registration and payment.
⏰ Payment Deadline and Late Penalties
- Fees are due by July 1, 2025.
- A 100% late penalty is assessed if payment is even one day late.
An additional 100% penalty is added every six months until the balance is paid in full.
🤔 Didn’t Receive a Bill?
To avoid penalties:

Contact the Rent Board by May 27th if you haven’t received a billing statement.

Or log into your account at rentregistry.cityofberkeley.info to download your bill.
If your unit has never been registered, you must file the appropriate form before a billing statement can be issued.
Rent Registry Portal Is Now Open
The Rent Registry portal is open for the 2025–2026 registration cycle.
Through the portal, you can:

Pay registration fees via credit card or e-check.
