Q & A No. 3
What is the requirement for inspecting gas heaters?
This requirement formerly part of the endlessly confusing Rental Housing Safety Program has been discontinued .The legislation repealing the requirement for the recurring certification of gas heating equipment had its second reading and was adopted at the July 19, 2011, City Council meeting. The RHSP office confirmed that the Schedule B inspection requirement is a thing of the past. Per the Residential Housing Safety Program office, the state requirement that Carbon Monoxide detectors be installed in all rental properties effective January 1, 2013, played a large part in the demise of the Schedule B inspection since both the Schedule B certification and carbon monoxide detectors work to do the same thing - prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. A quick check of BMC 19.40.040 confirms that the gas heating appliance certification verbiage has been removed.
