kavanaugh background
Chris Kavanagh, an elected Rent Board Commissioner since 2002, hasn't lived in Berkeley since 2001. The law requires him to be a Berkeley resident.
Since 2001, Kavanagh has repeatedly filed false campaign documents, under penalty of perjury. He has collected a salary of $6000 per year, and received generous medical benefits. And of course, he has sat in judgment of hundreds of disputes between landlords and tenants.
Kavanagh has also been Kriss Worthington's appointee to the Housing Advisory Commission during this time, and a constant militant presence on the opinion pages of our local papers.
Now Kavanagh is fighting eviction from his Oakland rental. His attorney is Marc Janowitz, former Rent Board Commissioner and now staff attorney at the East Bay Community Law Center. The EBCLC receives about $100,000 a year from the Rent Board to provide free services to the indigent.
The hypocrisy of Mr. Kavanagh cannot be overstated. To learn more, BPOA recommends you read our official letter to the City Council, and the original newspaper articles. Links to each of these appear below.
ABOVE ALL: let your elected officials know that you care, by emailing them. And let the rest of the public know that it matters, by writing a brief Letter-To-The-Editor to the Berkeley Daily Planet or Berkeley Voice.
