Re: AB 976 (Calderon) Residential Tenant Qualifications/Liability Reform
Dear Governor:
I am requesting your signature of AB 976, a bill that is very important to the entire landlord and property management community.
The initial catalyst of the bill was due to local governments adopting ordinances that compelled us to become de facto immigration police and forced us to compile individual dossiers of every tenant. We have successfully prevailed in every court when we have sued local government. Unfortunately, this has resulted in tremendous taxpayer cost.
AB 976 is a state issue because if the state fails to take action we will: continue to be threatened by local governments that adopt these ordinances; be forced to initiate additional, unnecessary and costly lawsuits, and defend ourselves against litigants challenging our right to request information about prospective tenants.
The bill does not change local government control, and if it did our cities and counties would have opposed the bill.
AB 976 is not an immigration bill because the federal government exclusively occupies the body of law.
As [*LANDLORDS OR PROPERTY MANAGERS - PLEASE CHOOSE AND FILL IN HERE] you can protect us from frivolous lawsuits.
Please sign AB 976.
